Who comments and who saves your posts: what you can know

Someone who comments on your post or saves it stopped scrolling and left a trace. A comment comes signed, with their handle right under your photo. A save shows up as a number in your post insights with no name attached, which is good to know before you go looking for one.

Two gestures that cost more than a like

A like takes a thumb and half a second. Commenting asks the person to come up with something to say and be fine with your other followers seeing it, and that alone filters out most people. Saving is quieter. It means they'll want this again, whether it's the Sunday recipe or the itinerary for a July trip.

So both carry more weight than likes or views, though they answer different questions: comments tell you who is paying attention, while saves point to the content people wanted to hold on to.

Tracking both yourself, today

All you need is the Instagram app and a notes file:

  1. Go through your last ten posts and write down the handle of everyone who left a real comment.
  2. Flag the people who show up on three posts or more. Someone who comments week after week is following you closely, and that group tends to be small.
  3. On those same posts, tap "View insights" and jot down each save count.
  4. Line up your most-saved posts and look for what they share: format, topic, time of day, caption length.

You end up with a list of names to reply to and start conversations with, plus a list of posts that helps you plan next month.

Instagram won't tell you who saved

Plenty of tools hint otherwise, so here it is plainly: Instagram shows how many times a post was saved and never who saved it. Meta's official API doesn't provide that data, and no legitimate app can hand you those names.

The count still earns its keep. If your "5 mistakes in your first edit" carousel got 300 saves and your behind-the-scenes video got 20, your audience just told you what they want within reach.
